New Nepali National Anthem

Cabinet approves Maila's song as national anthem
Nepalnews.com, 20-April-2007

The government has approved the anthem written by poet Byakul Maila as the new National Anthem of Nepal.

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Prithivi Subba Gurung informed that the cabinet selected the same song as the country's new national anthem.

On November 30 last year, the national anthem selection task team had selected the song written by Maila, alias, Pradeep Kumar Rai as the new national anthem. However due to disputes over the background of Maila and some words used in the song, there was no further progress.

The new National Anthem was selected from a total of 1,272 different songs submitted from across the country.

The minister also informed that musicians Ambar Gurung and Nhyu Bajracharya have been given responsibility to compose music for the song.

However, Maila was not formally informed by the government about this till Thursday evening. "I knew it through friends. There has been no formal information about the selection from the ministry," he added.

Poet Maila was born in the Hilepani village of Okhaldhunga district 34 years ago. Maila, who holds a Bachelor's degree in Law and a Master's in Public Administration has been serving the Nepali literature for the last one and a half decades. He has written dozens of songs, poems, haikus and is also the editor of Nepali Geet Sangraha (a collection of Nepali songs) and literary magazines like Barbhanjyang. He had actively participated in the April Movement.

The National Anthem is two stanzas long and each stanza has four lines. There are altogether 47 words in the new National Anthem.

The restored House of Representatives in its May 18 Proclamation declared the existing national anthem null and void and decided to develop a new one

Maoist Leader Prachanda Drives Stolen Vehicle

Police take into control Prachanda’s vehicle
Nepalnews.com, 18-April-2007

Police on Tuesday took a jeep used by the Maoist supremo Prachanda under control after businessman Raju Shrestha claimed that the vehicle belonged to him.

Superintendent of Police, Dhak Bahadur Karki confirmed that police seized the vehicle, adding, “The vehicle is in Kathmandu District Police Office, Hanumandhoka. We will hand it over to the person who comes with legal document.”

The Nissan jeep with plate number Ba 5 Pa 1718 was in the parking area of Hotel Ashoka at Bagbazaar when Shrestha, a resident of Budhanilkantha, claimed that the jeep belonged to him and it was stolen. He then got into it and started the vehicle using the spare key he still retained.

But Maoist cadres surrounded the vehicle before Raju could drive away. As a scuffle ensued between Shrestha and Maoist cadres, police arrived at the scene and seized the vehicle.

Shrestha said the Maoists abducted him and forcefully took away the vehicle including some valuables on October 19, 2006. He also said the real number plate of the vehicle was Ba 5 Cha 1718.

Maoist Central leader Ananta said the Maoists were planning to return the vehicle on Wednesday.

“We told Shrestha to come to the police office with sufficient official documents. We will hand over the jeep to the “actual owner” after an investigation,” SP Karki added.

It is said that the jeep is normally used to ferry top Maoist leaders, including Prachanda.

After he produced original documents and blue book establishing his ownership of the vehicle, police, on Wednesday, handed over the Nissan jeep to its lawful owner Raju Shrestha.

The jeep was seized by the police on Tuesday after Shrestha tried to take it away from the Maoists claiming that it belonged to him. The Maoists, however, gheraoed him when he tried to take away the vehicle which he saw parked in Bagbazar. Shrestha claimed that the jeep was confiscated by the Maoists when they abducted him in October last year. He said he had approached even the UN demanding that his vehicle be returned.

The Nissan Jeep with plate number Ba 5 Cha 1718 was reportedly being used by top Maoist leaders. When Shrestha found it parked in Bagbazar area, the jeep had a different number plate.

The police checked Shrestha's documents and the engine number of the jeep before handing it over to him

Top Hedge Fund Managers Salaries Ballooned in '06

Top Hedge Fund Managers Salaries Ballooned in '06
By REUTERS, April 24, 2007

The high-rolling life of the world's top hedge fund managers just keeps getting better.

The latest survey on hedge fund salaries shows that, for the first time, founding executives at three major hedge funds took home well over $1 billion last year. And the average pay for the top 25 hedge fund managers rose a staggering 57 percent to $570 million in 2006 from 2005, according to industry publication Alpha Magazine.

The magazine, which based its pay scale findings on fund performance, fees and ownership structure, said fund managers benefited from rising global equity markets, adroit investment strategies and fees paid from investors to manage their money.

The Alpha survey also showed that experience pays - among the top-10 earners are veteran traders including George Soros of Soros Fund Management, Bruce Kovner of Caxton Associates, Paul Tudor Jones II of Tudor Investment Corp. and Carl Icahn, the 1980s corporate raider-turned-hedge fund operator.

Topping the Alpha list for 2006 for the second consecutive year is James Simons, the 69-year-old founder of Renaissance Technologies Corp., whose pay packet swelled by $200 million to $1.7 billion in 2006 from $1.5 billion in 2005.

Billion dollar baby

Simons, whose Long Island, New York-based fund family generates profits through computer generated trading models designed to track minute changes in global securities markets, holds advanced mathematics degrees and maintains close ties to academia.

The second-highest 2006 earner, according to Alpha, is Ken Griffin, the 38-year-old founder of Chicago-based colossus Citadel Investment Group, a $12 billion fund group that trades in myriad strategies including energy, long-short equity, quantitative strategies and credit.

Griffin took home $1.4 billion in 2006, up from just $240 million in 2004, fueled by gains to its Kensington fund, which posted average annual returns of 20.7 percent over eight years and its Wellington fund, which gained an average of 23.6 percent in the same period.

Citadel also gained through its two-year-old electronic trading platform, which trades an average of 150 million shares daily, Alpha said.

Ranked third is Edward Lampert, head of ESL Investments, who is chairman of Sears Holdings Corp. (SHLD.O) and holds a 42.5 percent stake in the mega-retailer that he helped form by merging Sears into bankrupt Kmart Holdings in 2005.

The stock continues to scale upwards, rising 43.6 percent in the 12 months of 2006 and now trades at $189 a share, fueling gains for ESL as its biggest holding.

The following is the complete top-10 list of hedge fund earners in 2006:

1. James Simons, Renaissance Technologies, $1.7 billion
2. Ken Griffin, Citadel Investment, $1.4 billion

A Familiar Face?

Me, Krystal and our BFF for 84 seconds, Tim Gunn. He said he felt like a grandfather posing with us. For the record, that is not what my grandfather looks like.

On a girls' trip with my blonde bombshell of a former roommate Krystal. We're not attending the superbowl - just the parties (since apparently you have to make out with people for tickets). Better to watch it on TV anyway. Go Bears, woo.
