Student Visa Application Process

Instructions on using EVAF (Electronic Visa Application Forms)

Please read and follow the instructions below carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may result in a rejection of your application and delays in the processing of your case.

1. Download and complete the free Non-Immigrant Visa application
Form DS-156, available online at www.state.gov/m/a/dir/forms/ . Be sure to click the "continue" button before printing your application. Print the completed application form using a LASER PRINTER or a HIGH QUALITY INK JET PRINTER (use of lower quality printers will make your application unusable). Bring all three printed pages when applying for the appointment. All instructions on how to use the form are available on the website.

Note: Nabil Bank will not be able to process any DS-156 (application) not filled out in the proper evisaforms format.

All male applicants between the ages of 16 – 45 must also present a completed
Form DS-157. Student and exchange visitors must also submit Form DS-158. Handwritten or typed DS-157 and DS-158 are acceptable.

2. After you print your completed EVAF application forms, go any one of the six NABIL Bank branches which accept EVAF forms on behalf of the U.S. Embassy (Kathmandu, behind Namaste Supermarket in Maharjganj; Biratnagar, Birgunj, Butwal, Pokhara, or Nepalgunj) to schedule an appointment date. You will pay the non-refundable visa application fee equivalent to $131 and submit your application forms, along with a copy of your passport and your Nagarikta (if you are applying for a petition-based visa, please also submit a copy of your I-797). Nabil Bank will provide you with a fee receipt and an appointment date for your interview at the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy, located at Maharajgunj, Kathmandu. You must have your receipt for admission to the interview.

PLEASE NOTE: If the EVAF barcode on the third page of your application cannot be read, you will be required to fill out a new EVAF application. Please DO NOT tamper or spoil the barcodes printed on the EVAF forms.

3. Each applicant must possess a passport or travel document valid for at least six months after the end of the planned visit to the United States.

4. Please bring one 2”x 2” (50 mm x 50 mm) sized photograph without borders, taken against a white background.

5. Some visas, such as student (F) and exchange visitor (J) and intra-company transfer (L) visas require an additional issuance fee. Please check the visa reciprocity schedule at
travel.state.gov for detailed information on visa issuance fees and bring the fee with you to the interview.

6. Please do not fax, email or mail any documents to the Consular Section. All visa applicants are responsible for their own documents.

Please Note: The Consular Section can only provide emergency appointments in the event of emergency circumstances. Please apply early to allow for your travel plans. We recommend you apply 30 to 60 days in advance of your planned travel.

If you fail to show up for your NIV interview:

If you fail to show up for your NIV interview on the given date, you can still appear for an interview at a later date without repaying the fee. The MRV appointment receipt remains valid for one year from the date you purchased it from the bank. All you have to do is either email the section at consktm@state.gov or send a fax to 4007281 and your appointment date will be rescheduled.

The Embassy normally remains operational even if there are disturbances in the city. However, if you can’t come for the interview due to disturbances such as a bandh or civil unrest, or if you feel it is unsafe to travel to the Embassy, you can always appear for another appointment date by following the aforementioned procedure.
